COCKERMOUTH
Mission Control had advised us on a couple of destinations to consider, along with Cokermouth- which was looking a little far away and didn't have any particular noteworthy visitor attraction which we could discern at this point, but which, Mission Control thought, was worth visiting just for the photo ops.
BBC Lancashire serenaded us to Kendal. The ever present niggle of the lack of LPG pumps in Lancashire travelled with us, with the refrain "we need some LPG, yeh you know me"- Recks n Effect was it? Or Wreckx I' Nfkt or... some other nonsence spelling.
There are some cool wind turbines on the A684 to Kendal which we enjoyed. Cool sheep too. One poor ram-like specimen had a great big red patch sprayed on his arse which must, we couldn't help noting, have cramped his style with the ewes. And everywhere those stone walls, there's something about those stone walls.
KENDAL AND THE PENCIL MUSEUM THAT'S NOT THERE.
Kendal's infamous pencil museum was calling. The assistants had been trying to resist the many recommendations to visit. However, finding ourselves in beautiful Kendal we realised we had actually hunted it down or it had drawn us in somehow. So, of course we decided to take the path of least resistance and go to visit the home of not only the smallest pencil in the world but also the home of the largest pencil in the world, and maybe buy some mint cake too or something. Only to be told its 30 miles north in Keswick. We couldn't be arsed and the relationship we had with the Kendal Pencil Museum, which is actually called the Keswick Pencil Museum, funnily enough, ceased right there.
The Universe gives and so it taketh away- our punishment for not going to the Pencil Museum (not felt for 2 weeks, but well-felt nevertheless) was a speeding fine- 5mph over the limit, 60 quid and 3 points. Please note: Cumbria Constabulary are very hot on their well hidden cameras and all U.K. speeding fines are assessed on a 10% basis- i.e. 45mph in a 40mph limit is a no-no, 34mph in a 30mph limit is a nay-nay also. 10% guys- don't forget. We feel sure that had we visited our fated destination we would not have been penalty charged, is that superstitious?
On this bum note, we wish to report a further blow to morale. Unable to resist the temptation, we have googled the identity of Billing Aquadrome in Northamptonshire. As predicted it is very disappointing indeed and you must not be tempted to google it. Instead we have constructed our own wiki entry for The Real Billing Aquadrome.
